The Pepsi Recycling Rethink

Drinks brands constantly tell people to recycle their plastic and aluminium waste. But the truth is, two thirds of containers in Australia actually don’t get recycled. It’s clear. Telling people to recycle isn’t enough to drive real action. Pepsi decided to step up.

Partnering with Tomra and ‘Return & Earn’ over three years and two continents, we reignited a stagnate 50 year 10c refund model by revolutionised the way self-depositing recycling machines worked with one simple question: if you could earn more for recycling a Pepsi, would you recycle more Pepsi?

 
 
 
 

Instead of lecturing people on recycling we changed a long standing government-run recycling system, making recycling more entertaining and engaging for a broader audience.

 
 
 
 

Most importantly we designed the code to be compatible with Tomra’s global network of 100,000 machines, allowing not just Pepsi but every brand to utlise this function to encourage greater recycling around the world.
